Drive News: VW up!

Posted by on Aug 21, 2011 in Drive News

I’ve always been a firm believer in the notion of names beginning with a capital letter. Furthermore, I also believe that in all forms of written communication, exclamation marks should be avoided wherever possible. Needless to say then, the new Volkswagen up! is off to a poor start in my mind. The up! isn’t capitalised and has an obnoxious ‘!’ in it’s name. Unsurprisingly my complaints fall on deaf ears and the new VW up! will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

Drive News: Audi 1.8TFSI engine

Posted by on Aug 4, 2011 in Drive News

Let the arguments begin I think. Audi have developed a new 1.8TFSI engine, delivering of course a decent power bump and improved efficiency. As Audi is a member of VAG however, the engine will no doubt in time be ported into a number of different vehicles, at which point the manufacturers of these will swear blind they developed it themselves. Audi will get annoyed, VW will get territorial, it’s how VAG works. There’s still little consensus on who exactly developed the 2.0L engine VAG currently pops into everything with an engine bay.

917 short-tail, the legend

They’re coming Home! Porsche have officially announced their return to the LMP1 category for Le Mans, the revival being scheduled for 2014. This is a momentous announcement for the sport, as Porsche is the most successful marque at Le mans with 16 overall victories, a record they hold dear. Which might be the reason for their return, their Audi brothers are encroaching on that record with alarming rapidity, which just won’t do.

Drive Test: VW Caddy Maxi 2.0 TDI

Posted by on Jun 9, 2011 in Road Tests

I have an all together different vision of VW’s Caddy to what we have on test today, the 2.0 TDI Caddy Maxi Trendline DSG. Im my mind, the Caddy is the MK1 Golf bakkie. A Citi Golf with its rear roof chopped off, and fitted with all the same loveable nuances and rattles South Africa became utterly obsessed with over the decades, in the Citi Golf. This current Caddy is more of a soccer moms car, being a full 7-seater, and just like the similar Touran we tested a few months back, one of the easiest cars to drive you’ll ever find.
