The new SuperBoss? Really?

It’s been a long time coming, but at last the new Opel Astra OPC has hit SA shores to take the hot-hatch fight to the established big-hitters once more. A quick glance at the headline figures suggests this latest tarmac-shredder from Opel’s go-faster division has all the right credentials to depose even hot-hatch legends like the Megane Trophy and defunct Focus RS.

The compact hatch-based sports-coupe isn’t exactly an all-new niche. VW has actually been making a Scirocco or similar for a really long time, and just about all of the recognised hot-hatches either come with 3 doors as standard or have a 3-door body available at the very least. Except for Ford with the new Focus ST, but that’s just plain weird, and we expect the company to rectify this shortcoming soon.

Certainly sleek and sexy the Astra GTC.

If you could liken the Astra range to the small band of hardened warriors around which the movie 300 revolved, this Astra GTC would be the King Leonidas of the assemblage. That little bit harder, sleeker, and more focussed than the others, all similarly endowed with generous amounts of heart and sinew, but this particular range-topper just that slight but tangible step above the rest in sheer ability.

Drive News: Vauxhall Astra GTC

VW’s Scirocco and Renault’s Megane Coupe have been targeted, by this, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC. Opel brazenly and bluntly state this in the press release, their fighting words will mean little though if the Astra GTC fails to live up to the hype. What we know at the moment however, with the first official details on the GTC having being released, is that the GTC will be a force to be reckoned with in the mid-size coupe class.
