Gauteng, smacked.

Wow. It’s Friday night, been a hard week, weekend has finally arrived. Just the traffic left to deal with, and you’re there. The toughest week of 2010 in the bag.

But you’ve forgotten something important. Unbeknownst to the residents of Jo’Burg, to Gauteng on the whole in fact, national energy provider Eskom is preparing a little surprise for them. Lurking just beyond the car park, this terrifying bully is waiting. Question us, question NERSA, oh really?

Right on cue, the depths of rush hour begin, coinciding with the huffy collapse of pretty much all the major traffic lights as major, high-density suburbs are switched off simultaneously. Oh yes. Nice.

It’s still going on out there. There are reports of logjams 10km long. No doubt there are more.

Thing is, it takes a lot longer to clear a logjam than it does to create it. Even if all the power were to be mercifully restored, which it won’t, it’s going to take the everyday citizens of our country hours, and hours, to get home. To reach sanctuary. To relax.

Add the tragedy of road works into the mix and… a surefire recipe for widespread death and destruction on our roads tonight.

And on Monday, to resolve these tragic road accident statistics, there’ll be a couple of evil speedsters nabbed late at night over the weekend who are obviously entirely responsible for what a bloodbath our roads actually are, and a new commitment from Metro to eliminate unroadworthy wallets errrr vehicles through a series of more intensive, more traffic-inducing road blocks. Watch.

To those who make it home, well done. Of course, a good percentage of our JoBurg readers will only be able to see our congratulations tomorrow, when their lights come back on.

Gauteng is being punished bitterly for speaking it’s mind tonight. Here’s a momentary snapshot of the state of traffic in the province. It’s a decidedly irregular list, compare it to your current situation when you read this here.  Internet Explorer users only apparently!
